A Dog Walk, Advice Needed and a Sneaky Peek!

Firstly, I thought I would share some pictures I took when I was out with my daughter and the dogs the other day. I am taking my photographs with my iPhone and so far I am very pleased with the outcome. I usually have it with me so it is very handy and also compact.

The sky was a gorgeous blue, with cotton wool clouds.

There were some strange shadows!

My daughter was off in front with our beagle.

There are lots of catkins about now.

More Blackthorn is in blossom.

There are gateways to go through.

Bridges to cross.

Paths to follow.

Fields to gaze at.

Trees covered with Lichen.

Trees with lovely peeling, silver bark.

A few attempted 'arty' shots!

After all the rain we had, how come the land is so dry!

So there you are, shots from a dog walk. Next time I will do some on a beach walk but I don't walk the dogs on the beach when it is busy. As soon as the holiday season starts dogs are not allowed on the main beach which is very sensible considering the large amount of dog owners who do not 'pick up' after their dogs!
Now the Easter weekend is over it will be quiet again until May Bank Holiday so I will grab an opportunity.

Right, now for the advice.
This is the first blanket I have made from individual granny squares. It is the squares you had a peek of in this post here. I laid them all out on the floor and I haven't got quite enough yet, but my question is this, would you leave them as they are and join them or crochet another round in cream? I'm not quite sure what to do!
Love that they all came from balls of the same variegated yarn.

Little bundles of squares waiting for a decision.

I have an announcement to make :-)

I saw this somewhere on the net and thought it was so me, and I am working on my half finished projects, honest. The little wiggly crochet worm is growing and I will post more pics soon. See the above link if you don't know what I'm on about!
But I had the yarn for this so I thought I'd get started.

Issue 24 of Mollie Makes
It uses Sirdar Crofter DK and Sirdar Calico DK, neither of which I have used before. The Crofter is lovely and I have one colour called Seagrass which I can't wait to use. The squares I have done so far are in May shade 0074 and the constant colour changing makes me crochet faster to see how the squares will turn out! Does anyone else do this?

Phew, that was a bit of a rambly post. Please feel free to comment with your ideas about what I should do with my Granny Square blanket*, I know there are quite a few people dropping in but not commenting ;-)

*Named Billy Blanket (after my Jack Russell who is no longer with me, he always used to sit next to me under my projects and yarn and was a real character who is very much missed.

Many thanks to those who have already commented on my blog, it is always lovely to know that someone is reading and even better when they take the time to leave a comment. I appreciate them all xxx

  3. Well, Rowen, I am torn as you are between the two! I suggest you make a sample with the cream color border. Dont even cut the yarn (so it doesn´t go to waste). And then look at it from afar...Then you will see if you like it or not. If you are going to join them with sc, maybe you can do so with cream. Well...anyway you go, I am sure it is going to be lovely. I am with you with the varigated yarn...it is fun in its unpredictability ;-)

    1. Morning Ana, thanks for the advice I am going to track down some similar cream wool and give that a go. I was going to try and join on the go if I did that. This is a bit of a learning curve for me as it is my first granny square blanket. I may be back with more questions :-) Rowen x

  4. Hi Rowen. I am loving the colors of your blanket. Such pretty blues, greys, and creams. I think they would have better contrast of you did a round of cream around each one. It would frame each one and make them more beautiful. This will add some extra work though and I do think it will be beautiful if you just join them as is. It's going to be so calm and soothing either way. I can't wait to see what you decide.

    1. Hi Jeanette, as you can see Ana suggested the same so I am going to do that. It will give me a lesson in 'joining as you go' and it's always good to learn new things. The new project I've started is made up of squares too so doing this one will prepare me for that. Thanks for the advice Rowen x

  5. Hi Rowen,great pics-looked like a beautiful day for a walk.
That's a tough one with the blanket,I think it would look lovely either way, but after several long looks at it I think it would be perfect joined as it is ,I love the way those tones all work together.
I can't believe you are using that Sirdar Crofter too! A friend at my little knit and crochet group told me about it and how it knits up to look like Fairisle pattern,so,I decided to attempt to resurrect my knitting " skills" ( ha ha ! ) and I ordered it along with a pattern for a cardigan...talk about in at the deep end ! Pleased to report progress has been made,I could remember how to cast on, etc and it does indeed knit up like Fairisle ( something I 'd never master in a thousand years !) Still prefer crochet though :)
Really look forward to,seeing the finished blanket....whatever option you decide on .
    Have a good week .

  6. Hi Carole, as you can see from the above comments and looking at the way the Mollie Makes blanket is edged with a plain colour I'm going to give that a try. I'll do a few and see how it looks then post it to see what people think. The Crofter has a different feel to it and I'm very pleased with it so far. Good luck with your cardigan, if you have read my earlier posts you will know I am not the worlds speediest knitter !! I knitted socks in self patterning sock yarn and that is amazing, I posted a pair earlier in my blog. Thanks, as always for visiting, Rowen x

  8. Hello Rowen, I found my way here from Bunny Mummy's blog. I love the restful colours in your blanket. I'd never thought of using yarn like that for granny squares but it is beautiful. Do you mind me asking what yarn it is? I've used join-as-you-go for lots of projects but think I actually prefer the definition of each square and 'grid' effect you get when joining with single crochet using a contrasting colour. It's also a much neater and tighter join, in my opinion. I'm sure whatever you choose will look lovely and look forward to seeing some ta-dah pictures when it's finished.

    1. Hi Caroline, thank you for visiting. The yarn is James C. Brett Woodlander DK and the shade I used is L9 I don't think it has a name. It is 80% acrylic and 20% wool, hope this helps. I will have a look at joining with sc and see which I prefer. Hope to see you back here soon, Rowen x
