Sea Fever

Sea Fever

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

From SALT-WATER POEMS AND BALLADS, by John Masefield, published by the Maxmillan Co., NY, © 1913, p. 55; the poem was first published in SALT-WATER BALLADS, © 1902.

The above poem was one of my mum's favourites, and consequently one of mine. She often used to quote the first two lines when we were walking on the beach, so it has very strong memories of her attached to it.
What better way to start off a post that contains beachy pictures.

In the winter months, roughly October till March, the beach belongs to the locals. Most of the holiday makers have gone and the beaches are quiet once more. The first busy weekend of the year is Easter, then a few weeks of quiet until May Bank Holiday and after that the town is bustling again. Gradually more people head for the beach until on a hot day in mid summer there is not much space at all.

Early season and the beach is deserted.

The beach is flat and sandy, no rocks, but there can be areas of shallow water left behind when the tide goes out.

Flotsam and jetsam along the tide line.

Lots of shells, dried seaweed and pebbles, but no sea glass AT ALL! No holiday makers either!

Little sand sculptures made by the wind.
I found these little sculptures on the promenade, a bit of leftover sand from the high winds we had earlier this year. They look like little houses to me. Almost like a Bethlehem skyline on a Christmas card.

A cautionary sign, the beach is not all fun.

A lovely calm sea.

Part of the sea defences.
These rocks are now covered by layers of sand! They have been put there as an extra defense against the tide coming over, which it does in the winter months when there is an incoming tide and the wind is off the sea. The rocks supposedly break up the force of the tide.

You can tell this is a different day, very cold and grey.

The bottom picture was taken on a different day, and can't you tell!

Lastly two pictures that aren't the beach but part of one of the local foreshore gardens.

This was taken crouched down at the end of the waterfall, I like to take photographs from different angles. I don't profess to be a photographer at all I just like to take pictures.

I love living by the sea.

A Dog Walk, Advice Needed and a Sneaky Peek!

Firstly, I thought I would share some pictures I took when I was out with my daughter and the dogs the other day. I am taking my photographs with my iPhone and so far I am very pleased with the outcome. I usually have it with me so it is very handy and also compact.

The sky was a gorgeous blue, with cotton wool clouds.

There were some strange shadows!

My daughter was off in front with our beagle.

There are lots of catkins about now.

More Blackthorn is in blossom.

There are gateways to go through.

Bridges to cross.

Paths to follow.

Fields to gaze at.

Trees covered with Lichen.

Trees with lovely peeling, silver bark.

A few attempted 'arty' shots!

After all the rain we had, how come the land is so dry!

So there you are, shots from a dog walk. Next time I will do some on a beach walk but I don't walk the dogs on the beach when it is busy. As soon as the holiday season starts dogs are not allowed on the main beach which is very sensible considering the large amount of dog owners who do not 'pick up' after their dogs!
Now the Easter weekend is over it will be quiet again until May Bank Holiday so I will grab an opportunity.

Right, now for the advice.
This is the first blanket I have made from individual granny squares. It is the squares you had a peek of in this post here. I laid them all out on the floor and I haven't got quite enough yet, but my question is this, would you leave them as they are and join them or crochet another round in cream? I'm not quite sure what to do!
Love that they all came from balls of the same variegated yarn.

Little bundles of squares waiting for a decision.

I have an announcement to make :-)

I saw this somewhere on the net and thought it was so me, and I am working on my half finished projects, honest. The little wiggly crochet worm is growing and I will post more pics soon. See the above link if you don't know what I'm on about!
But I had the yarn for this so I thought I'd get started.

Issue 24 of Mollie Makes
It uses Sirdar Crofter DK and Sirdar Calico DK, neither of which I have used before. The Crofter is lovely and I have one colour called Seagrass which I can't wait to use. The squares I have done so far are in May shade 0074 and the constant colour changing makes me crochet faster to see how the squares will turn out! Does anyone else do this?

Phew, that was a bit of a rambly post. Please feel free to comment with your ideas about what I should do with my Granny Square blanket*, I know there are quite a few people dropping in but not commenting ;-)

*Named Billy Blanket (after my Jack Russell who is no longer with me, he always used to sit next to me under my projects and yarn and was a real character who is very much missed.

Many thanks to those who have already commented on my blog, it is always lovely to know that someone is reading and even better when they take the time to leave a comment. I appreciate them all xxx

Saturday Treat

On the spur of the moment I decided to have lunch out with younger son yesterday. My daughter was out with her bf so it was just the two of us. Not very riveting conversation with a fifteen year old who spends his time glued to his phone, but food was on offer so he didn't refuse! We went to a favourite Italian coffee shop, run by a 'real'  Italian, and had Bologna Panini. I had a Mocha Coffee and D had hot chocolate. It was all delicious and I think D secretly liked the idea that he had been out for lunch with me and C had missed out! Unfortunately sibling rivalry is rife at the moment!

I am trying to be braver about taking photographs in public, if Sue at Sweetpea Family can do it in John Lewis, go look at her stuning pictures! I'm sure I can do it too.

D was trying very hard to look as though he wasn't with me and hissed 'What are you doing, why are you taking pictures?' then raised his eyebrows quite theatrically.

But do you know what?
The world didn't come to an end!
I didn't get thrown out of the cafe! The owner did give me a glance and probably muttered something in Italian under his breath about mad English women taking pictures of a Panini!
D didn't die of embarrassment!
So all was good and so was the Panini, in fact it was very good!

PS They also do the most amazing Italian ice-cream but as it was about 50 below outside (maybe a slight exaggeration but the wind was so cold it was skinning your cheeks!) we decided to leave it for another time, and another photo oppurtunity :-).
